A Continental sampler from the Biedermeier period
This sampler, probably made in Germany, retains its vivid original color on the front of the sampler. Three bands of roses surround rows of alphabets and numerals above a stylized Chinoiserie pagoda flanked by palm trees. It appears that she has also worked two pattern exercises at the bottom, flanking an urn overflowing with flowers,
The sampler is dated 1829, followed by the initials LM and AM.
Stitches used are cross and bargello (aka counted satin).
On 40 count linen the sampler, recommended for any skill level, will measure approximately 10" x 16", closest in size to the original.
